Momz — Local Community App

Helping mothers connect nearby and build real-world relationships through a community app grounded in extensive user research and testing.

Turning local discovery into real-world connection

Momz is a community platform designed to help mothers discover and connect with others nearby — first by exchanging useful information online, then through direct communication, and ultimately by forming real-world connections.

Working closely with the founder, I helped shape this progression into a structured product concept and led the complete design process from user research through UX/UI design and usability testing.

Full design ownership from research to testing

I worked independently with full design ownership, collaborating closely with stakeholders and potential users throughout the process.

Connecting different needs within one approachable community

The product brought together several interconnected social features — a community feed, messaging, local discovery, networking and user profiles — while keeping the overall experience approachable and easy to understand.

A central challenge was enabling relevant local connections between mothers with different backgrounds and needs, while gathering enough information to make those connections genuinely useful.

Designing relevant local discovery around real user needs

Local discovery was structured around factors such as children's ages and shared interests, helping mothers find people nearby with whom an online connection had a realistic potential to develop into an offline relationship.

Onboarding played an important role in making this possible. I designed profile creation as a simple, playful and motivating experience, gathering the information needed for relevant connections without making the process feel demanding.

Research informed the design throughout the project. I conducted in-depth user interviews and usability testing with a deliberately varied group of potential users, ensuring that different needs, behaviours and expectations were represented rather than designing around a single user profile.

The visual direction required careful calibration. The brand needed to resonate specifically with mothers while avoiding the stereotypical visual language often associated with products targeting women. I developed a warm and playful identity that felt distinctive and approachable without relying on conventional gender-coded aesthetics.

From independently funded concept to launched mobile product

Momz was an independently funded, founder-led project with the ambition to turn a strong community concept into a real product. The founder was a mother of a young child financing the development herself, so keeping the project realistic and achievable was an important consideration throughout our collaboration.

We established a scope and budget that worked for both sides without compromising the core experience, enabling the project to progress from research and concept development through complete UX/UI design and ultimately into development.

This was a significant outcome in itself. Early-stage, independently funded product concepts often never progress beyond the design phase; Momz successfully made that transition and was ultimately launched as a real mobile application.
